The Helen Keller Art Show of Alabama -- a juried competition of works by Alabama children who are visually impaired, blind or deaf-blind -- is at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, 511 N. Water St., Tuscumbia, from Monday, June 6, through Friday, July 1.
Hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. weekdays and 1-3 p.m. Sundays. Admission charged, Sundays free and group rates available.
Open to students in Alabama public, private and residential schools, this annual exhibition tours state museums and agency galleries from February through June, It arrives at the Tennessee Valley Museum of Art, just yards away from Helen Keller’s birthplace, in time for the Helen Keller Festival of the Arts, June 25-26.
The Helen Keller Festival Board selects one art piece each year to receive the Patty Johnson Award (named for Helen Keller’s niece) and the piece is retained in Tuscumbia in a permanent collection. The remaining exhibition pieces are auctioned by silent bid.
The Helen Keller Art Show was established in 1983 as a cooperative project among agencies serving children with visual impairments.
